This guide provides that framework, grounded in organizational realities, cost data, and migration patterns that actually work.
Why the Microservices Hype Is Misleading
The microservices movement was driven by legitimate problems at companies like Netflix, Amazon, and Google: monolithic codebases that could not scale organizationally to thousands of engineers. At that scale, independent deployment, polyglot technology choices, and service-level team ownership genuinely improve engineering velocity. But most enterprises are not Netflix. A company with 50-200 engineers building a business application does not face the same organizational scaling challenges that motivated microservices at FAANG companies. Adopting microservices at this scale often introduces distributed system complexity without the organizational benefits that justify it. Migration Patterns: How to Move from Monolith to Microservices
If you have determined that microservices are the right direction, the migration approach matters enormously. The big-bang rewrite (rebuild everything from scratch as microservices) fails more often than it succeeds. The root cause is usually extracting services along technical layers (a separate service for authentication, logging, or data access) rather than along domain boundaries. Nano-services represent the opposite extreme: services that are too small to justify independent deployment. The right architecture is the one that matches your organization's size, maturity, and strategic needs today, with a realistic migration path to where you need to be in three to five years. For most enterprises, that means starting with or maintaining a well-structured modular monolith, investing in the organizational and operational prerequisites for microservices, and extracting services incrementally only when a specific domain genuinely needs independent deployment, scaling, or technology choice. The most expensive architecture decision is the premature one. Do not adopt microservices because it is the industry default. Adopt microservices because your organization has the specific scaling challenges, team autonomy requirements, and operational maturity to benefit from the tradeoff.
